Railfan Canada seeks to express the photogenic and artistic aspects of your Canadian railfan photography. Contributors are a vital and necessary component to presenting quality images to our readers. The future of the magazine depends on your contributions.
Railfan Canada is looking for high quality images that depict Canadian railways in photographs. The kind of photos you take that seem to ‘jump out’ at you! Photos out on the mainline; in the yard; new or unusual scenic opportunities — you know the kind. If there is a story line to a particular shot, we’d like to know that, too. Captioning should be done by the photographer — he/she knows best about the photo in question. Submissions should also include details as to location, camera type, difficulty, etc. — those details that you would like to pass on to our readers.
Photo essays consisting of several photos and a brief story line are acceptable and encouraged. By presenting your photos, you are encouraging others to get into this wonderful ‘hobby’ of railfanning, too!
Railfan Canada is produced digitally and therefore, digital photos are the easiest submissions to work with. Modern technology incorporated in digital cameras of today produce excellent images. However, submissions will not be limited to digital — the quality and depth of slide and print film is still preferred by many photographers and these images are more than acceptable. We seek photo spreads from both film and digital medium and taken in all kinds of conditions. Historical images from days gone by are also encouraged!
Digital Photos: digital photographs (or those that you have scanned on a high resolution quality scanner) be burned to a CD in .jpg format. Files must be of minimum size of 300 pixels per inch (PPI) at 8" x 10" or larger size. This will ensure excellent reproduction when printed.
Slides: It is recommended that contributors have slides scanned at their source on a high-end commercial scanner — this will ensure that you are happy with the results when printed. If you are unable to scan your own slides, they must be sent in plastic sleeves with your name on each slide. We cannot be held responsible for lost or misplaced slides. The slides will be scanned on Railfan Canada’s own commercial scanner for use.
Prints: Colour prints must be of minimum size 8" x 10" on high quality photographic paper. It is not recommended that prints be sent which have been printed on home-use printers — we wish to maintain the highest quality of the original. All prints must have identification placed on the back of each print. Use a label to add this information and affix it to the back of the print. Do not write directly on the back of your prints!
Each item submitted must have a suitable caption unless it is included in a story line or photo essay. Also include your address, telephone number and e-mail address (very important.)
Payment rates for articles and photo spreads are pending.
Items to be returned must be accompanied by a postage paid return envelope.
